Going Over All the Hurdles: A Life of Oatess Archey by John A. Beineke
The fifth volume in the IHS Press youth biography series, this book explores the career of the first African-American to be elected sheriff of Grant County, Ind. Item #8963, $17.95 (cloth).

“There I Grew Up”: Remembering Abraham Lincoln’s Indiana Youth by William E. Bartelt
In 1859, Abraham Lincoln covered his Indiana years in one paragraph and two sentences of a written autobiographical statement that included the following: "We reached our new home about the time the State came into the union. It was a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals in the woods. There I grew up." William E. Bartelt uses annotation and primary source material to tell the history of Lincoln's Indiana years. Item #8966, $27.95 (cloth).

Alone: The Journey of the Boy Sims by Alan K. Garinger
This fictional story recounts the journey of 13-year-old Joshua Sims, who joined the federal survey crew for the new Michigan Road. Along the way, Sims encounters runaway slaves, Native Americans, canal builders, fur traders and other figures of the rapidly changing frontier. He finds help in unexpected places even as he faces danger in the unfamiliar terrain. These experiences force Sims to re-evaluate his beliefs as he begins to understand the consequences of pioneer settlement and development of the land he calls home.
