Online Catalog - Search one of the world's largest collection of materials on the history of Indiana and the old northwest

The IHS Collections and the William Henry Smith Memorial Library both preserve and make accessible one of the largest archival repositories of material on the history of Indiana and the Old Northwest, including more than:

  • 34,000 digital images online (30 collections)
  • 5,000 processed manuscript collections
  • 1,100 cataloged maps
  • 575 broadsides
  • 14,000 pieces of sheet music
  • 1.6 million photographs (500 visual collections)
  • 45,000 cataloged printed items (books, pamphlets, etc.)
  • 3,300 artifacts
  • 60 paintings
 

The Library is open Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Please view our holiday schedule for days we will be closed during the year. For more information call (317) 234-0321.

Located inside the Indiana History Center, the library houses an abundance of unique resources, including a variety of books, photographs, maps, letters and diaries from the Civil War era, catalogs, business records and much more. Access to the library is free; membership is not required. Skilled librarians and archivists at our state-of-the-art facility are on hand to assist both the novice and professional researcher. For questions concerning the donation of manuscript, printed, or visual materials to the William Henry Smith Memorial Library, please read our collections development policy and then contact us.

Be advised that the staff of IHS is unable to provide monetary appraisals of any kind to the public. Although we can not provide appraisals we can provide referrals to a number of appraisers who can, for a fee, assess the likely value of an item.

Please be aware that the Indiana Historical Society does not collect large-scale, three-dimensional artifacts. For items of this nature, please contact the Indiana State Museum at (317) 232-1637.
